Waiting for My Hair to Grow

Six to eight chemos
she said when the news
jolted me.

Lucky me.
Only six times
for poison
to drip silently through veins,
killing cells
gone mad.

Then no more hair
or eyelashes or eyebrows -
a face gone bland.
Just two dark eyes staring back at me
in the mirror.

Now no more needles,
no more nausea,
no more nights
awake
pondering life
and death.

Slowly, slowly
a familiar face emerges in the mirror.
Patchy black and white stubble
appears on my head,
bends and curls.

I wait for my hair.
